PGA Catalunya Resort to welcome full ‘Spanish Armada’ for 2014 Open de España
Larrazábal and Cabrera-Bello join growing field of contenders, which include former Ryder Cup captain José María Olazábal and fellow European Tour star Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño
(Girona, Spain – May 09, 2014) Pablo Larrazábal and Rafael Cabrera-Bello, ranked among the world"s top 100 golfers, are among the latest players to have confirmed their presence at The 2014 Open de España, which will take place at PGA Catalunya Resort, near Barcelona, from May 15-18.
Joining an impressive list of Spanish golfing icons set to play the country"s national Open, compatriots include Sergio Garcia (ranked 8th in the world), Miguel Angel Jimenez (33rd) and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (47th), as well as Alejandro Cañizares, currently ranked 101st, ensuring the turnout of what Royal Spanish Golf Federation’s president Gonzaga Escauriaza referred to, in his speech during the official presentation of the 102nd Open de España, as the full "Spanish Armada".
Pablo Larrazábal, an iconic player on the Catalan golf scene, commented: “The Open de España is very special to me. Aside from the Majors, it is the tournament that excites me the most. The fact that this year’s event will be staged on such an excellent golf course as that of PGA Catalunya Resort’s Stadium Course means we’ll have all the ingredients for a great tournament.”
The Barcelona-born golfer returns to the Girona region after having recently triumphed on The European Tour, with a win at The Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January 2014, to build on his previous Open de España performances, which saw him come third in 2011 and second in 2012.
Meanwhile, Rafael Cabrera-Bello will join his fellow countrymen at PGA Catalunya Resort to better his fourth-place finish in the 2002 edition, at a time when he was still an amateur and experiencing a prolific stage of his sporting life during which he accumulated all Spanish junior championship titles.
Since turning professional in 2006, Cabrera-Bello has accumulated two wins on the Challenge Tour – MAN NO Open 2006 and Credit Suisse Challenge 2008  and two European Tour victories, at The 2009 Austrian Golf Open 2009 and The 2012 Dubai Dessert Classic, which punctuate a solid career that complements the high level of local Spanish golfing talent set to take the stage during The 2014 Open de España.
